Lake Superior Facts
If you have never visited Lake Superior or do not live in Canada or
the United States you may be unfamiliar with the large size of this
lake. The word lake usually brings to mind the picture of a body of
water that you can look across, viewing its far shore. Lake Superior,
the largest fresh water lake in the world does not fit this picture.
Superior borders Canada and the United States, and if you were
crossing the middle of Superior in a boat you would find yourself far
enough from land that your horizons would be water in all directions.
Below are some facts to help you understand the size of Lake Superior:
Length: 450miles/563 km
Width: 160 miles/259 km
Depth: 489 ft./149 m average with the maximum depth being 1,335
ft./407 m
Water Surface Area 31,700 miles squared/82,100 km squared
Volume: 2,934 miles cubed/12,230 km cubed
Average Water Temperature: 40 degrees Fahrenheit/4.4 degrees Celsius
If you were to drive the "Circle Tour" of Lake Superior you would
drive 1,300 miles

I am a retired elementary school teacher, and have spent most of my
teaching years in Cody, Wyoming mainly in third grade. My
husband and I both took an early retirement from teaching and have
enjoyed exploring our country with our small fifth wheel camper, as
well as cruising the coast of Canada with our sailboat for a few weeks
each summer.
My favorite camping and anchoring locations are those
in unspoiled natural environments. When visiting towns or cities I
prefer those with excellent museums, and/or interesting cultural or
historical significance. I
love the natural world from the deserts to the swamps, mountains to
seashore, insects to the largest mammals. Music to my ears may be the
clacking of the dry fronds of a palm tree, the sound of waves upon a
shoreline, the songs of the birds, the chirp of the crickets, the wind
through the pine trees, or the sound of a mountain stream. I strongly
believe in protecting our environments and wildlife, even if it means
some inconveniences for man. It is we who have placed our planet and
its inhabitants in jeopardy, so it is we who must now be the
protectors of the planet. I am always curious about the world around
me. I will stop in my tracks to examine an interesting mushroom,
flower, spider, beautiful beetle, snake, toad, frog, etc. In my
younger days I was known to grab a snake at first glimpse, but since
moving to Wyoming, one must be sure it isn't a rattlesnake before
reaching for it. I yearn for peace and understanding between all
people regardless of race, religion, or political beliefs. Because of
my beliefs I belong to the on line action groups for
World Wildlife Fund,
The Natural Resources Defense Council's BioGems,
and
Amnesty International,
all organizations that work to protect our world and make it a better
place to live in. I was born in southern Wisconsin, but Cody feels
like home, as I have spent most of my adult life here. I also live in
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan summers. I enjoy hiking, sailing and
other types of boating, swimming, camping with our small 22' fifth
wheel, photography, gardening, reading, using my photos to create my
own greeting cards, feeding and observing birds, visiting National
Parks and Monuments, State Parks, aquariums, environmentally
responsible zoos, and museums. I subscribe to "RollingStone" magazine
and enjoy blues, rock, and classical music. I like Keb Mo, B.B.King,
Muddy Waters, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, the Doors, Aerosmith, U2,
the Beatles, and Yo-YoMa's beautiful cello to name just a few. I am
always interested to hear what the new artists have to offer. I am
married with one grown son who is a graphic designer and lives way too
many miles from home. Well that is who I am in a nutshell. May you
enjoy my pages and may you find love, beauty, health, and peace in
your life.
